Daventry students awarded for Achievements

Inspiring stories about Daventry students who have overcome difficulties or achieved outstanding academic results were heard by guests at Northampton College’s thirteenth Annual Awards Ceremony.

Seventeen students received awards for their personal journey during their studies over last academic year at the Guildhall in Northampton on Friday 20 November.

Principal Len Closs said, “Our Annual Awards Ceremony recognises all our students. The stories we have heard about our Daventry learners were inspirational and a testament to the ongoing hard work, attitude and dedication to learning shown by so many. We will continue to recognise the accomplishment of our outstanding learners as we take forward our ongoing plans for the Daventry Learning Partnership.” This ceremony was based on the achievements of learners from academic year 2008-09.

Some students’ achievements from Daventry have been summarised below…

Ellen Finn, 18 from Daventry

Ellen is a learner at William Parker School, one of the College’s partners in the Daventry Learning Partnership. Ellen worked hard to perform well in her GCSEs and continued to work solidly throughout last year. She has high expectations of herself, and always sets herself very high targets.

She achieved two A grades for English Literature and Psychology and a grade B for Law at AS Level. Her result in English Literature was the best in the College and she was one of the highest achievers in both Law and Psychology. Ellen is expected to achieve excellent grades in her A Level exams in the summer.

Liam Holmes, 17 from Towcester

Liam lacked confidence in his abilities when he enrolled on the National Diploma in Health & Social Care. But with regular extra help from the Additional Support team he learned how to check his work more thoroughly and manage his time more effectively.

A crucial forum for his progression has been his work placements at local schools in which he excelled. As a result of his work placement, he decided he would like to become a primary school teacher. He is now performing well, is assured and eloquent in the classroom environment and is on schedule for completing his Diploma in the summer.

Joan Essam, 40 from Daventry

Joan first came to the College three years ago when she completed Literacy and Numeracy qualifications. She went on to study Literacy at Level 2 and, despite serious health problems, she achieved the qualification.

Joan underwent extensive surgery during term time, returning to class after just three weeks because, in her own words, she “didn’t want to miss out”. Joan returned to College in September to complete her Level 2 Numeracy qualification.
