Students show off restored Scooters

A group of Engineering students from the Daventry Learning Partnership will exhibit four fully restored scooters at a national event in Coventry on Sunday.

The Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations students have been studying a motorcycle repair module, and as a part of their learning, have restored four vintage scooters. The students will take their finished scooters to the Vintage Motor Scooter Club’s Extravaganza event on Sunday in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Coventry.

Tutor Alan Sparham said: “There’s a national shortage of motorbike mechanics, so we decided to run a module in motorcycle repair, and it’s proved incredibly popular. When we first got the scooters in, they were in serious need of TLC, and the students have done themselves proud – it’s incredible the standard to which they’ve been restored.”

There are several awards up for grabs in various classes, and the students are hopeful they can pick up recognition for some of their showpieces. Adult learner Matthew Crombie from Rushden said “I’ve really enjoyed being involved in every stage of the restoration process – I love taking things apart, fixing them and seeing the finished article. We’re taking one retro piece to the show in Coventry, and three real showpieces – people should be impressed at the quality of our work. It’s been a real team effort getting them all ready, and we hope people enjoy looking at them as much as we have restoring them.”
